About

Mark Sutherland is a management and leadership coach, based in Sydney.

My background: I was born in Singapore and have lived in Britain, Brunei, Malaysia, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Australia. Formative experiences were my education in North Yorkshire, service in One Squadron Honourable Artillery Company, emigration to Australia, a career in banking, superannuation and investment and, since 2010, in teaching, training and facilitation.

My highest qualification is a Masters of Business Administration from the Australian Graduate School of Management. I taught Change Management and Leadership at degree and diploma level (including for Charles Sturt University) and have facilitated courses for the Frontline Management Institute.

I’m also the author of Exterminating Poverty: The true story of the eugenic plan to get rid of the poor, and the Scottish doctor who fought against it (written in conjunction with Neil Sutherland), which tells the true story of a battle against eugenics in 1920s Britain.

So, what does it mean for you?

When I coach individuals or facilitate groups, I apply my expertise to help each participant travel along their path to success.

  • My experiences have been many and varied and, given adversity and setbacks, at times hard-won. I learned as much (and sometimes more) from failing exams or getting lack-lustre results as from getting high distinctions. I’ve never forgotten what it is like to not know, the confusion that is caused by poor explanations, and of the importance of context. This is reflected in the clarity of my delivery and in the aposite examples with which I illustrate my points.
  • When I started work, it was at the bottom of the corporate ladder. My earliest jobs gave me insights into how (formal and informal) incentives work at different levels of an organisation, and were essential in keeping me grounded when acquiring “book knowledge” at diploma and post-graduate level. While I am conversant with the theory and frameworks, my approach is practical and based in the real-world.
  • My experience of different countries, organisations, institutions and cultures enables me to relate to people of all backgrounds, cultures and collar-colour.
